NILU Polska was established in December 2001 as a subsidiary of Norwegian Institute of Air Research NILU. The main mission of NILU Polska is to assist various stakeholders of the environment in Poland, including users of the environmental resources, environmental managers and planners, research scientists and academia, as well as the general public in their approaches to reduce environmental impacts caused by various socio-economic and natural drivers of environmental change in the most effective and economic manner.
NILU Polska undertakes investigations of air pollution problems, and offers consulting services for public authorities, industries, international organisations and others. NILU Polska's flexible project administration can offer a complete and specially designed programme for any air pollution problem, including the necessary scientific and technical personnel. NILU Polska has a staff consisting of scientists, engineers and technicians experienced with UE cooperation by means of services offered within scientific projects
International activities
NILU Polska works for national and international customers, often in partnership with NILU and other research institutions. Since 2001 NILU Polska has undertaken many tasks as co-ordinator for international environmental research projects. Presently NILU Polska is working worldwide on projects related to air quality monitoring and management. Institutional building has become an important part of these projects.

Activities in Poland
Following fields of our interests can be pointed out:
- air research - first of all we offer developed by NILU a modern Air Quality Management System AirQUIS, the state of the art tool in the air quality management.

The system is GIS based with user friendly interface. Many different applications are possible and system was/is used worldwide by commercial customers, authorities and scientists.
Among others it is used in many EU FP research projects.
Apart from this we offer contribution in elaborating and/or evaluating ecological effects of local strategies on the abatement of low emission from residential sector, what, together with transportation, is the major source responsible for air pollution in Poland.
- renewable energy - Polish energy sector is being transformed from coal towards renewables according to the idea of the sustainable development.
The greatest potential for our "green energy" lies in biomass.
NILU Polska concentrates on the subject of biogas and liquid biofuels by gathering information about technology suppliers and analyzing Polish market of potential clients.
We have initiated several biogas project on different scale and we assist both the technology supplier and the client.
We hope that the first investment project in Poland will start soon.

- financial support for ecological investments - our main participation in investment projects comprises the environmental impact analysis and application for founds. Biogas plants and other investments in environmentally friendly technologies are rather expensive and in Poland this cost determinates the possibility of application. To made the project economically reasonable we apply to Ecofund, EEA grants, different EU and Polish funds.
